How to Plan a Sunrise Pre-Wedding Shoot in Singapore

There is something rather magical about Singapore before sunrise.
The roads are quieter. The air feels a little cooler. The city seems to slow down for just a brief moment before everyone begins chasing the day ahead.
It is also our favourite time to photograph.
Over the years, we’ve found ourselves returning to sunrise sessions time and again. Not simply because the light is beautiful (though it truly is!), but because mornings have a way of making people slow down too.
There are fewer distractions.
Less rushing.
More conversations.
More laughter.
More opportunities to simply be together.
If you’re thinking about planning a sunrise pre-wedding session in Singapore, here are a few things we’ve learnt along the way.
Why sunrise?
We often get asked whether couples should choose sunrise or sunset.
Both are beautiful in their own ways.
But if we had to pick one for Singapore, sunrise usually wins.
The morning light is wonderfully soft and forgiving. Instead of harsh shadows and squinting eyes, you get a gentle glow that wraps around everything. It feels calmer, quieter and somehow a little more intimate.
Just as importantly, the city hasn’t quite woken up yet.
Popular places that would normally be bustling with joggers, tourists and weekend crowds suddenly feel like they belong to the two of you.
For a little while, at least.
It isn’t about chasing the sun.
It’s about creating space for yourselves.
One thing we’ve realised after photographing hundreds of couples is that the photographs are rarely about the location.
They’re about how you felt when you were there.
When there isn’t a crowd watching, couples naturally become more relaxed.
You talk more.
You laugh at silly things.
You hold each other a little longer.
Those are usually the moments we find ourselves drawn towards.
The sunrise simply creates the space for those moments to happen.
How early should we start?
Earlier than you probably think.
We generally recommend arriving at the first location around 10 to 15 minutes before sunrise.
That often means an early wake-up call.
Perhaps a cup of coffee.
A slightly sleepy drive through empty roads.
Surprisingly though, most couples tell us afterwards that it was completely worth it.
The sky changes every few minutes, and each stage brings a different mood.
Keep your locations simple.
One temptation many couples have is wanting to visit as many places as possible.
Coney Island.
Gardens by the Bay.
Fort Canning.
Botanic Gardens.
Maybe one more if there’s time.
The reality is that beautiful photographs rarely come from rushing.
Instead of squeezing five locations into one morning, we’d much rather spend unhurried time exploring one place properly.
Sometimes the nicest photographs aren’t made at the famous landmarks.
They’re made in the little path connecting two locations.
Or under a tree that wasn’t part of the original plan.
Or while walking back to the car.
The adventure often happens between destinations.
Wear something that lets you move.
Our sessions are never about standing still.
We like wandering.
Exploring.
Taking little detours whenever good light catches our eye.
That is much easier when you’re comfortable.
If you’re planning on wearing a wedding gown, we generally recommend something light and easy to move in.
Not because large gowns aren’t beautiful.
They absolutely are.
But lighter outfits give you the freedom to climb a little hill, walk barefoot across the grass, stroll along the beach, or simply hug each other without worrying about every step.
The less you have to think about your outfit, the more present you’ll be.
And that always shows in the photographs.
Leave room for spontaneity.
Some of our favourite sessions have gone completely differently from what we originally planned.
Clouds rolled in unexpectedly.
It started drizzling.
We found a beautiful alley that wasn’t marked on any map.
Those little surprises often become the stories couples remember years later.
Having a rough plan is important.
Holding onto it too tightly isn’t.
Do we need to know how to pose?
Not at all.
In fact, we’d rather you didn’t spend the session worrying about posing.
Our approach has always been simple.
Walk.
Talk.
Explore.
Be curious.
Don’t treat it like a photo shoot.
Open hearts, open minds.
Think of it as more a session to hang out and reconnect with each other.
We’ll introduce small activities and facilitate questions along the way, and will guide you whenever needed, but we’re much more interested in capturing the little in-between moments than perfectly choreographed poses.
The way you instinctively reach for each other’s hand.
The quiet conversations.
The smiles that appear when nobody asks you to smile.
Those are the photographs that tend to mean the most years later.
A few things worth bringing
We generally encourage keeping things simple.
A comfortable pair of walking shoes.
Some water.
A small towel.
Perhaps a bouquet if flowers are your thing.
And plenty of curiosity.
The lighter we travel, the easier it becomes to wander wherever good light takes us.
At the end of the day, the beautiful sunrise is one thing, but…
Its more about beautiful memories.
Looking back, very few couples tell us they remember the exact time we started shooting.
Or the camera we used.
Or even the exact spot itself.
They remember watching the city wake up together.
They remember the morning coffee.
The cool breeze.
The conversations between locations.
The shared excitement of doing something a little out of the ordinary.
Those are the moments that stay.
The photographs simply become a way of revisiting them.

We always keep an eye on the forecast, but Singapore weather can be unpredictable. We always plan the shoot with a buffer day in mind, and if the weather doesn’t hold, we’ll advise having the session postponed.
